Of all the Western European countries, Belgium may sometimes get overlooked. When you Google the top famous European destinations, the EU capital does not make the list. Travelers go to France, Italy, Greece, Spain, and Portugal. Although these places have some acclaimed sites to discover, you should not sleep on Belgium. 

Belgium and its Influence

For the average American, Belgium is synonymous with waffles and chocolate. However, many need to learn the importance and influence Belgium has had and continues to have. Fun fact: did you know French Fries are not actually from the French? Yes, French fries should be called Belgian fries because its history dates back to the late 1600s when villagers fry potatoes in winter. After all, they could not eat fish because the rivers were frozen. Not only did Belgians influence our love for fries, chocolate, and waffles, but it also played a significant role in international relations. Belgium is the “de facto” capital of Europe. It hosts the European Union, its different offices, NATO, the United Nations, UNICEF, and the World Bank. From Belgium, you can travel to France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Germany, and the United Kingdom, making it one of the most accessible destinations to visit other countries. 

Moreover, Belgium has many gems that many people do not see. Its diverse history and culture invite you to explore medieval castles, tour essential buildings like the royal palace and the European Parliament for free, and enjoy some good Belgian beer at any old cafe. When they choose to visit Belgium, some people settle for its capital, Brussels, not knowing that Belgium has one of the best-kept secrets 51 minutes away by train, and that best-kept secret is Bruges. 

Discover Bruges

There are many words to describe Bruges. One may say it is romantic, picturesque, charming, relaxing, or “one of the most beautiful cities in the world.” People often call it the “Venice of the North” because of its canals, medieval architecture, and cobbled stone streets. This enchanting city beckons you to explore its hidden treasures. Bruges is a testament to Belgium’s rich history and breathtaking architecture. There are so many beautiful things to do and see in Bruges, making it an ideal destination even for a day trip. 

I visited Bruges on January 2, 2021. After spending the New Year in bed because I was sick, I wanted to get out of Ghent to explore a new city. People had told me about going to Bruges, and from a few Google pictures, I added it to my travel wish list and dreamt of going before the lockdown restrictions. I created a romantic fantasy about the city before even visiting. Although I was upset when some activities I wanted to do in the city were canceled, I still felt it would be worth visiting, and I was not disappointed. When I exited Bruges train station, my imagination came true. Bruges is everything I thought it could be and more. As a history lover, an architecture lover, and a traveler, Bruges checked all the boxes. Here is why Bruges is a hidden gem.

What Makes Bruges Magical? 

One aspect that makes Bruges Belgium’s top destination is its profound historical significance. Brugge’s story dates back to the 9th century when it started as a humble fortress settlement. Over the centuries, the city evolved into a bustling medieval trading hub, gaining immense wealth and influence. Today, Bruges retains its historical charm, with its well-preserved medieval buildings and canals earning it the prestigious title of a UNESCO World Heritage site. As you stroll through its cobbled streets, you can’t help but feel a sense of wonder and awe at the city’s remarkable history. Everywhere you walk, you are walking through ancient history while being in the present. 

Bruges, a haven for architecture enthusiasts, boasts a tapestry of architectural styles that reflect various influences from different periods. The city’s iconic Belfry Tower, standing tall at 83 meters, offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The Gothic-style Church of Our Lady houses Michelangelo’s mesmerizing sculpture, Madonna and Child, a true masterpiece. The beguinages, tranquil courtyards that once housed religious women, provide a serene escape from the bustling city. Exploring Bruges is like stepping into a living museum where every building tells a story. 

Another reason Bruges is a travel destination for solo and group travelers is its plethora of unique experiences. Things to do in Bruges

1. Canal Boat Tour

One aspect that made Bruges famous is its canals. Bruges canals have been the “vein of the city for centuries.” Some canals connect to other canals. For example, the Bruges-Ostend Canal connects the North Sea to the interior of Belgium. People describe the Groenerei as the most romantic canal in Bruges because it is lined with trees, mansions, and almshouses, giving you a beautiful, enchanting, relaxing atmosphere. You may plan to embark on a panoramic boat tour along Bruges’ canals. Drift under charming bridges, past colorful houses, and alongside swans gracefully gliding on the water in any of the canals in the “Venice of the North.” This relaxing journey allows you to admire Bruge’s enchanting beauty from a unique perspective. Tours are 30 minutes. The tours begin from 10 AM to 6 PM. The Captain gives you a guided tour from Jan Van Eyck Square to Beguinage. Each trip tailors to the language of the audience. In case of rain, visitors will receive umbrellas to continue the adventures. You can schedule your trip between March to mid-November. 2. Market Square (Grote Markt) 

Secondly, one of my favorite must-see attractions in Belgium, especially in Bruges, is Grote Markt. Located at the heart of Bruges lies the bustling Market Square, where history, culture, and culinary delights become one. Marvel at the majestic 14th-century belfry, explore the quaint shops selling Belgian chocolates and lace or indulge in savory treats at one of the many outdoor cafes. The square’s vibrant atmosphere captures the essence of Bruges’ lively spirit. It is a perfect place to indulge if you are a solo traveler. The idyllic scenery allows you to relax, live in the moment, and explore. Exploring the city center of Bruges is truly a one-of-a-kind experience. The charming cobblestone streets and historic buildings telepathically take you to another era while the bustling cafes and restaurants keep you rooted in the present. Going inside the iconic Belfry of Bruges offers a stunning view of the city from the top. 

3. Choco-Story Museum

One activity I was planning to do when in Bruges was to visit the Choco-story Museum. The Choco-story museum brings the 5,500 years of chocolate history to life in words, images, and taste. Being at the Choco-story museum will captivate your senses for a delicious experience. Whether you love chocolate like me or visit because of your curiosity or for history, you can unleash your inner chocoholic at the Choco-Story Museum, where you’ll embark on a delectable journey through the history of chocolate.  You can learn about cocoa cultivation, witness the chocolate-making process, and savor a variety of mouthwatering chocolate samples. This interactive museum is a must-visit for chocolate enthusiasts. The museum takes you on a journey through the history of chocolate, from its origins as a sacred drink for the Aztecs and Mayans to its transformation into the beloved treat it is today. 

The exhibits are interactive and engaging, with plenty of opportunities to learn and taste. One of the highlights is watching a chocolatier create beautiful and intricate chocolate sculptures right before your eyes. The museum also offers a demonstration of the chocolate-making process, which is both fascinating and delicious. The gift shop is a chocolate lover’s paradise, with countless varieties of chocolate bars, truffles, and other treats available for purchase. Overall, I highly recommend a visit to the Choco-Story Museum for anyone with a sweet tooth or an interest in the history and production of chocolate.

4. Groeningemuseum

The fourth memorable thing to do in Bruges is to visit the Greoningemuseum. Groeningemuseum is like a mini Belgium Louvre that displays six centuries of Belgium’s art. Arts and history lovers can immerse themselves in the world of Flemish art at the Groeningemuseum. The museum showcases a remarkable collection of Flemish masterpieces. Witness unique masterpieces from Jan van Eyck to Hans Memling. Admire these artistic treasures’ intricate details, vibrant colors, and emotional depth.

I had the opportunity to visit the Groeningemuseum in Bruges, and it was an incredible experience. The collection of Flemish and Belgian art from the 14th to the 20th century is stunning, and I was amazed by the beauty and detail in the paintings on display. The section featuring works by Flemish Primitive painters like Jan van Eyck and Hans Memling was a particular highlight for me. The attention to detail and use of light and color in these works is truly remarkable, and it’s easy to understand why these painters are considered some of the greatest of all time. The Groeningemuseum is a must-see for everyone. Whether you are interested in art or history, there is something for everyone. I highly recommend it!

5. Biking in Bruges

The last but best activity in Bruges is biking around the city. Belgians, like their Dutch neighbors, are bike riders. Renting a bike is another great way to discover Bruges. You may rent a bicycle and explore the city’s outskirts, discovering hidden gems and charming windmills. Bruges’ flat terrain and well-maintained cycling paths make it a cyclist’s paradise. Pedal through serene parks, picturesque neighborhoods, and peaceful canals. Immerse yourself in Brugge’s idyllic surroundings.

Biking around Brugge is a must-do while in Bruges. It is an incredible experience that no visitor should miss out on. The city’s charming streets, stunning architecture, and picturesque canals make a perfect backdrop for a leisurely bike ride. Biking around Bruges is a fun and healthy way to explore the city and allows you to cover more ground than you would on foot. Bruges is a relatively small city, making it easy to navigate by bike. You can rent a bike from one of the many rental shops in the city center and set off on your adventure. The city is also home to several bike tours that offer guided rides along picturesque routes while highlighting the city’s history and culture. Whether you are a seasoned cyclist or a beginner, biking around Bruges is an enjoyable and memorable experience.
