Before diving into the bulk of our packing tips, let’s discuss why traveling with a carry-on is a game-changer.
Why Traveling with a Carry-on is a Game Changer
The first time my friend Jasmina saw me traveling throughout France with only a carry-on, she almost passed out. Since she is an overpacker, she can not fathom the thought of going on a week-long or month-long trip with only a carry-on. Because I know it annoys her, I love teasing her by sending her a picture of me exploring various cities with my carry-on. Her reaction is always disbelief and wonder at how I can pack my life into a carry-on suitcase. She will always ask why I would do such a thing or how I can accomplish that because she cannot. Maybe you are wondering the same thing, and here is a clear answer:
- Freedom
Imagine walking with all your necessities packed in a carry-on suitcase and a travel tote bag with a cup holder and a shoe compartment, both light and easy to move around. Imagine not having to come to the airport 3 hours early to check your bags. You get to walk straight to the TSA, have your luggage pass inspection, and be on your way to your gate within 30 to 45 min. You get on the plane, put your carry-on in the overhead bin, and your tote bag under your seat.
When you land, you retrieve your carry-on and travel tote bag, go through the security checkpoint and immigration, show your passport, and get on a train or tram to your hotel, and start your adventure without a hiccup. When you get to your hotel, you can unpack and find everything you packed, thanks to packing cubes that keep your carry-on organized. Doesn’t that sound like a stress-free travel experience? That’s the first freedom you get when traveling with a carry-on.
- Money Saver
The second thing that comes to mind when I think of traveling with a carry-on is the money I will be saving. Over the years, I have paid hundreds of dollars for checked luggage. Since I moved abroad for studies, I thought I needed to pack more than I needed to, and no matter how many times I weighed my suitcases, they were still over the limit. I paid hundreds of dollars in my early days of traveling, which I regret because, like my friend Jasmina, I never considered traveling with a carry-on.
The first time I traveled with a carry-on outside of my weekend trips while in Europe was in 2019, when I traveled to California for a 7-week fellowship program at UC Berkeley. Traveling domestically gave me the mindset that I could purchase extra clothes if I needed to at a store I recognized, which helped me save on luggage costs. The mindset of traveling internationally with a carry-on developed only after I started taking week-long trips to Milan, Barcelona, and Thessaloniki. These short durations allowed me to get into my mindset that I did not need to pack much, just the necessities.
- Lower Risk of Losing Your Baggage
The third benefit of traveling with a carry-on is a lower risk of losing your baggage. Traveling with a carry-on ensures you have everything you need. You can bring it through the TSA security and keep it with you until you board the plane. Placing it in the overhead bin gives you peace of mind that it is near you. You can easily get up and grab it when you land. You do not need to go to baggage claim to wait to see whether or not your bags flew with you.
The only time you don’t have your carry-on is when the overhead bin is full, and there’s no space. The airline will put it in with the other checked bags at the gate, and even if you do not have it in the overhead bin, you can retrieve it at the door when the plane lands, bypassing baggage claim. However, airlines may ask if you want to pick it up at your destination instead, but this only happens when you have a short layover, and it is unlikely to happen. I’ve had one of my suitcases taken at the gate and retrieved it when I reached my destination, and another time, I had to retrieve it during my layover at the gate. So it is important to be aware of that option and ask when your bag is taken at the departure gate.
Now that you know the 3 major benefits of traveling with a carry-on, let’s discuss the necessities you must have as a traveler traveling only with a carry-on.
What Should You Pack in a Carry-On?
The essentials for travelers traveling with only a carry-on should include:
- 5–7 versatile clothing items
- 2–3 pairs of shoes
- Travel-size toiletries (3.4 oz or less)
- Packing cubes for organization
- Portable charger and travel adapter
- Travel documents and personal items
- A travel tote or personal bag
These are the core items to ensure you pack efficiently and as lightly as possible. Below, I will share strategies to help you avoid overpacking and ensure you have everything you need. This strategy is called the 5-4-3-2-1 strategy.

How to Use the 5-4-3-2-1 Strategy to Travel With a Carry-On
When traveling with a carry-on, there are critical rules you need to abide by, with the first being, ONLY PACK THINGS YOU NEED. Travelers with carry-on means everything you pack has a purpose, and you will actually use it. Most people suggest using the 5-4-3-2-1 rule when packing your carry-on. (Although we give examples of how female travelers can use these strategies, travelers of both genders can apply them as well.)
First, let’s answer what the 5-4-3-2-1 strategy is.
The 5-4-3-2-1 packing rule is a minimalist packing method that includes:
- 5 tops
- 4 bottoms
- 3 pairs of shoes
- 2-layering pieces
- 1 dress or special outfit.
Do not forget to add pajamas, socks, and undergarments.
One may ask, “What is the benefit of using this strategy?” On the surface, it looks like that is not enough clothing to bring for a 1-, 2-, or 7-week getaway, as the one I had during my fellowship in California.
However, fear not, here are 3 reasons why travelers who have traveled with a carry-on swear by this method.
- Time Saver
The first reason the 5-4-3-2-1 strategy works is that it saves you time when packing. Although packing seems like the easy part, as a traveler of almost a decade, I can tell you it is one of the most stressful parts, and many travelers agree. That is why overpackers overpack because packing brings all sorts of anxiety. You want to make the best impression in the city or country you are visiting for the first time. You want to make a good first impression, so you want to bring as many of your best outfits as possible. That is why this method forces you to choose wisely, appropriately, and save time.
- Space Saver
The reason travelers love the 5-4-3-2-1 packing strategy is that it saves space. As a traveler with a carry-on, you have to practice being a minimalist. Whereas with checked luggage, you might be able to put clothes in one suitcase and toiletries in another. With a carry-on, you are mixing various compartments. Therefore, everything you need for your trip in your carry-on must have a space, and using the 5-4-3-2-1 strategy helps you fit everything that needs to be in it.
- Helps You Stay Organized
The third benefit of using the 5-4-3-2-1 strategy is that it helps you stay organized. With this strategy, you can organize your tops, bottoms, dressy clothing, shoes, and toiletries in different packing cubes, so you know exactly where your items are. When packing your suitcase, you can organize your items neatly, assigning each one a location. Unpacking and repacking are made easy because you know what goes where.
Moreover, the 5-4-3-2-1 strategy helps you create multiple outfits without overpacking. You can create different looks for 1 to 2 weeks of your adventure. When choosing your outfit, opt for neutral colors or colors that blend well with any outfit.
Clothing articles that will make excellent choices are:
- Fayene Women’s Long Sleeve V-neck blouse. It is a dressy blouse that you can wear casually or for an important occasion.
- The Astylish Women’s Bow Tie Neck Top is another stylish blouse that pairs well with any bottom.
- The EVALESS V-neck is a dressy blouse that you can wear casually or at events.
For bottoms, you can bring two pairs of jeans, a pair of slacks, and a skirt:
- The JEKAOYI Women’s Casual High-Waist pants are the perfect pair of bottoms for casual and dressy events. Crafted from premium, stretchy, and breathable materials, the trousers fit any body type.
- For those who love jeans, the Sidefeel Women’s Wide-Leg High-Waist Jean is a great option. It is stretchy as well, giving you room to move around during your travel adventures.
- For skirt choices, look no further than the Chouyatou Women’s High Waisted Skirt. This flowy skirt can be paired with several tops, taking you from casual streetwear to a cocktail-ready high-fashion dress. It is versatile and makes a great article of clothing to pack up in your carry-on.
When it comes to footwear, I recommend bringing one pair of sporty shoes for your walks, mini-hikes, and just everyday errands.
- The STQ Walking Shoes Women‘s Slip-On meet those requirements. It is made with breathable materials, giving you breathability and flexibility to move around. With great traction and cushion technology, every step feels easy and comfortable.
- A second great option is the Gyeice Women’s Walking Shoes. Its arch support enhances stability and comfort and relieves foot fatigue. The cushioning technology protects your knees and feet.
- For sandal choice, the Alicegana Sandal Walking With Non Slip is a must-have. It is a great choice for exploring, wearing at a coffee get-together, or cocktail hours. Its neutral color blends well with any outfit. The Athlefit Espadrille Low Wedge Sandals are another good choice. The wedge-heel design gives you height without destabilizing you. You can effortlessly pair it with a dress, pants, shorts, or skirts.
For a layering piece, I prepare a shawl.
- The Moss Rose Women’s Shawl Wrap is one of my favorites. It is heavy enough to keep you from the cold breeze during the fall, winter, and spring. Wrapping it into a bow creates a fashion-forward look.
- The Sofier Women’s Shawl Wrap Soft Wool-Blend Cape is another good shawl option. It is a one-size-fits-all, which is great for all body sizes.
- If you want a jacket, sweater, or cardigan-type layering piece, the CHICME Women’s Lightweight Casual Plaid Jacket is a good choice. Another option would be a Zeagoo Bomber Women’s Varsity Jacket. It is trendy, fashionable, and it can be easily paired with any outfit.
Now that you have an idea of what to bring for clothes, it is time to pack them and ensure they all fit in your carry-on suitcase. Here are a few packing must-haves to make space in your carry-on and ensure you have all the necessities for your adventure, so that your carry-on is as smooth as possible.
Carry-On Packing Must-Haves (Best Amazon Travel Essentials)
- Packing Cubes (The #1 Packing Essential)
The first must-have packing item for travelers, especially those traveling with carry-on, is packing cubes. If you struggle to fit everything in your carry-on, this is the one item that will change everything. The BAGAIL 6-Set Packing Cubes are a good travel companion for your packing needs. These packing cubes help you maximize space, organize your items by category, and make them easy to find. If you are the type of traveler who still needs to carry more than the minimum amount we listed, the Veken 10 Set/8 Set is a must-have.
Unlike many packing cube sets, this set includes a hanging toiletry bag with 4 compartments to organize your toiletries and cosmetic essentials. Another type of packing cube to ease packing stress is the compressing packing cubes, like the one from BAGSMART. It’s 6 Set/4 Set/2 Set Compressing Packing Cubes offer 60% space savings, not only giving you more space to add extra items in your carry-on, but ensuring you have a lighter, weightless carry-on.
- Travel Tote Bag/ Duffel Bag
If you already have a carry-on from years ago but have been using your purse as your other piece of luggage, I would advise investing in a travel duffel or tote bag. It drastically improves your packing efficiency during travel. Travel tote bags are versatile and spacious, designed to accommodate personal items, snacks, or essentials you may need on hand during your journey. One of the fashionable travel bag investments is the LOVEVOOK Travel Duffel Bag. There’s a pocket for your computer, phone, and more. It also comes with a separate toiletries bag for your toiletries needs.
Another good option is the Weekender Bag by ITIEZY. What makes this travel special is that it includes a shoe compartment that separates your shoes from your other items and seals away shoe odor. It has 3 Sets, including the crossbody bag, toiletry bag, and 2 adjustable, detachable shoulder straps. I purchased the PASMAN Multiple Pocket Work/Travel Bag. It has been an amazing companion and has a lunch compartment to store your food, freeing your hands when walking through the airports.
- Electronic Organizers
The 3rd item that will help you stay organized and keep your carry-on organized is an electronic organizer. The versatile gadget serves as a compact storage solution designed specifically for managing all your electronic accessories. Imagine having a dedicated space for your cords, chargers, headphones, and portable power banks, rather than letting them tangle in the bottom of your carry-on. Electronic organizers protect delicate accessories from damage and make it quick and easy to find what you need when you need it.
The FYY Travel Cable Organizer is an amazing choice. It’s compact, lightweight, and durable, with a soft sponge inside to keep your gadgets secure and prevent damage if there is a spill in your purse or travel tote bag. The Skycase Electronic Travel organizer is another ideal option. It has 8 compartments, giving you space for your chargers, phone, portable charger, headphones, and so much more. BAGSMART’s dual-layer electronic organizer allows you to keep your power bank, international adapter, and cell phone in one place. These electronic organizers are a great investment. They are easy to slip into your bag without adding weight to your carry-on, keeping you organized and traveling light.
Now that you have all the organizational resources to make traveling with a carry-on easier, let’s dive into your tips for using them and packing efficiently, saving space, and ensuring all your travel necessities have a place on your journey.
Carry-On Packing Tips (How to Pack More in Less Space)
- Put Your Blouse in a Compressing Packing Cube
When you begin to pack, start with your packing cubes. Compressing packing cubes helps compress your clothes. This tool is essential for your tops. You can put all five tops in one compressing packing cube and compress it. The method neatly packs your clothes and leaves extra space for other items.
- Roll Over Your Bottoms
When packing your bottom clothes, rolling is the most effective way to maximize space and minimize wrinkles. Unlike traditional folding, which can create creases and take up more space, rolling lets you secure each item tightly. Start by laying your pants or shorts flat, then fold the legs in and roll from the waistband to the hem. This compact method lets you neatly fit all your bottom garments into a single packing cube, making organization easier and keeping your clothes looking fresh for your travels.
- Wear Your Bulky Items
While traveling with a carry-on, aim to minimize the weight you bring. Although carry-on suitcases usually stay with you throughout your journey, there are instances where an agent may ask you to check them in, especially if they look bulky or overweight. Therefore, if you plan to bring a big jacket or coat, wear it. The same goes for your bulky shoes. I once wore my wedge heels through the airport in Milan because they wouldn’t fit in my luggage, and my other shoes fit more easily.
- Pack Personal Items in the Travel Bag/Tote Bag
When traveling with only a carry-on, it’s essential to optimize the space since many items typically packed in checked bags will now need to fit in your carry-on. Make sure your personal items are easily accessible in your travel bag or tote. Essential items include your electronic organizers for devices, a passport holder for important documents, snacks for energy during the journey, and a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated. Additionally, don’t forget your toiletries and makeup essentials in a compact bag, and your laptop or tablet for entertainment or work during the trip.
- Minimize Liquid to Meet TSA Guidelines
One of the most important things to remember when traveling with a carry-on is to minimize liquids, since your carry-on will have to go through TSA. That is why inside your toiletry bag, you must have a waterproof compartment for the 3.4 shampoo, conditioner, and body wash bottles. If you must use liquid shampoo, conditioner, and body wash, make sure you meet the 3.4 OZ requirement. However, you do not have to use liquid. Brands like Kitch create shampoo and conditioner bars. You can purchase their Rice Water Protein Solid Shampoo & Conditioner duo. Instead of body wash, you can opt for a bar soap like the Dove Gentle Cleanser or the SheaMoisture Bar Soap for travelers with sensitive skin like me. Instead of using a liquid makeup remover, save time by opting for makeup remover wipes, similar to hand sanitizer wipes.
PS….
Travelers who need a new carry-on or want to update their carry-on luggage for their adventure should consider the TILYMOL Hardside Carry-On Luggage. Approved by many airlines, the 21.25×13.78×8.88 inches luggage fits most overhead compartments. Its 360-degree rotating features make it easy to move, and it makes no sound. It is sturdy and can support weights of 100lbs, allowing you to pack more items. Lastly, it has a built-in TSA lock to secure your belongings.
Another carry-on that is a good investment is the Coolife 3-Piece Luggage Set. This set is the ultimate must-have for travelers who seek to travel with only a carry-on for a long time. The set includes a 20” carry-on suitcase, a travel duffle bag, and a toiletries bag. The trio offers plenty of storage for your adventure with a carry-on. Like the TILYMOL suitcase, the Coolife 20” carry-on suitcase has a TSA-approved lock, ensuring dependable protection for your belongings. The duffle bag and toiletry bag are water-resistant, featuring multiple pockets and a back sleeve that slides through the luggage handle.
Lastly, you should consider the Wrangler Smart Spinner Hardside Luggage. The brand offers flexible options, including a 2-piece set that includes a suitcase and a tote bag. What makes this suitcase option a must-have is its patented 3-in-1 cup holder, USB port, and phone holder located in the back of each suitcase, providing travel convenience. Being able to charge your phone while holding your tote bag in place is an amazing feature. It gives you a clear view of your items and keeps everything in place while at the airport or train station.
Conclusion
In conclusion, learning how to travel with only a carry-on can completely transform the way you travel. With the right packing strategy and a few smart travel accessories, you can pack everything you need while staying organized and stress-free. Whether you’re heading on a weekend getaway, a study abroad program, or an international adventure, these carry-on packing essentials will help you travel lighter and smarter.
Do not forget to get a portable luggage scale to weigh your carry-on so it is light and easy to carry, and an international adapter to keep your electronics charged and ready to use. Before your next trip, make sure you have the right travel essentials. These small items can make a huge difference when packing a carry-on.
