One of the most significant ways to integrate into a new city or a new country is to create a home. When you move somewhere, everything around you will remind you that you are a newcomer. From the unfamiliar street to creating a new routine and finding your way around the new city, you will have a constant reminder of how you are not in your sense of normalcy. This feeling deepens when you travel to a totally new country, with a different system, language, and culture. The first place that will give you peace and will be your source of comfort will be your dwelling.
Moving abroad, although exciting, comes with a lot of unknown, especially when you are a young person studying abroad. You have to figure out your class expectations in a foreign country, how to provide for your basic needs, and integrate into a new society. One of your safe spaces is your accommodation. Your apartment, whether it be a studio, a bedroom in a shared house, or a 1-bedroom, becomes your own space of confidence. That is why it is crucial to ensure it feels like home. This travel guide helps you make your temporary house feel like the home you cannot live without. It will provide tips on how to create a home that you will comfortably come into every night after experiencing the exhaustion of always having to figure it out while you are abroad. However, before putting on my Martha Stewart Home Deco hat, here are my experiences living abroad and creating a home.

The Importance of Loving Where You Live
One of our basic needs as humans is indeed shelter. Having a roof above your head gives you dignity and helps you feel safe and secure. Before traveling, one of the first things to account for is accommodation. Knowing where you will lay your head every night allows you to enjoy your adventure more. Hence, travelers must conduct thorough research to ensure they are in a safe environment when they move abroad, where they can rest without worry.
One of the factors that made my time in Belgium stressful was not having accommodation arranged before I traveled. When I moved to Belgium, I spent a month and a half looking for an apartment. Since Belgium has a domicile requirement, I had difficulty finding a landlord who would allow me to rent their property. After spending two weeks at a hotel, I went to a family friend’s house. Living with people I did not know well added extra discomfort.
When I finally found my apartment, I felt a sense of relief. I remember moving to my studio and being excited to have a place where I could call my own. I can cook for myself and eat as I like without worrying whether I offended someone or not. I was happy to have a sense of safety, a place to relax, cry in private, enjoy movie nights, and date nights without having to accommodate anyone. Being that I was living in Belgium during the pandemic, having my own place allowed me to social distance effectively. However, having a roof alone does not make a place feel like a home. Every place where you live needs personal touches to make it feel like a home. Here are 10 Must-Buy Items to Make Your Apartment Feel Like Home when you are studying abroad.

10 Items to Have to Transform Your Dwelling
- Room Divider
One of the items I had to add to my shopping cart when I lived abroad was a room divider. While studying abroad, many international students either share a house with other students or live in a studio. Although many will find accommodation through their host institution, like I did when I studied abroad in Shanghai and France, some will end up looking for accommodation through the private market. For students who rent rooms or a studio, a room divider is the most effective way to create a homey feeling in your room or studio. A room divider allows you to separate your sleeping area from the other parts of your room or studio.
When I was in Belgium and had a studio, having my sleeping area, kitchen, living room, and study space all in one setting made it challenging to concentrate. My bed became my study place, sleeping and dining space. Since I was taking an online course, there were days when I slept during my classes because there was no separation between the different parts of my house, and everything was lumped together. Hence, I bought a divider to give each section of my room its own character.

A room divider turns your room if you are renting a room in a house or a studio, like a one-bedroom apartment. You can use a room divider like the Sunally Room Divider No Drilling Curtain Rod Wall Divider for room separation in a rented room or studio to separate the sleeping areas from the other area. The rod will not leave any holes or marks in the walls, floor, or ceiling, so you don’t have to worry about damaging the apartment and getting your security deposit back. This divider does not come with a curtain, so you can buy a curtain to add to the divider. I prefer getting a Blackout curtain, like the PONY DANCE Black Curtain, to add to the divider and truly separate your spaces. Another good choice for a divider is the CBSRORO Room Divider Ceiling Mounted Curtain. The set comes with a blackout curtain, so you do not have to buy the curtain separately. The curtain track is bendable so that you can install it in an arc, round, square, or rectangular shape. You may need to drill two holes to hang the ends to the ceiling, but you may ask your landlord to help ensure they are in the know and do not create a problem when it is time to move out.
For a more decorative divider, you can buy the BMIDRUT White Hanging Room Divider 12 Pieces DIY Panel Screens. They are 11.4 by 11.4 inches, and the set includes everything you need to create a divider for your room. It is easy to install through hooks and screws. You can use it as a divider or a decoration for your living room and bedroom. It is washable, so if you stain it, you can easily clean it. All of these divider options are great to give your studio, room, or apartment character. They are all easy to install and easy to pack as well. Should you want to return home with these dividers, you will have to unhook the screws and pack them in your checked suitcase. For all these reasons, room dividers are a must-have for students and young professionals living abroad and in tiny spaces.

- Cookware/Kitchenware
The second thing I recommend purchasing when living abroad or moving to a new place is cookware and kitchenware. Investing in cookware ensures you can treat yourself to healthy meals and save money while studying abroad. In American colleges, many students live in dorms and eat in the university’s cafeteria. While we do pay for our meal plan, it is included in our overall bills. Therefore, as students, we do not feel like we are spending money every day on food. However, while living abroad, most universities do not have the same systems in place for accommodation and meals. Although there are cafeterias near universities, they are not part of the tuition, so students have to spend money every day to eat at the cafeterias.
For example, when I studied abroad in Shanghai, I lived in a dorm room provided by East China Normal University. There was a cafeteria on campus, but we would pay based on what we ate. This system is different from the American system, where you swipe your student ID and go to the cafeteria as many times as you please, eating various things without having to pay for set plates. When I was at Sciences Po Rennes, I stayed in a dormitory provided by a third-party provider, where students from different universities also stayed. Although there was a school cafeteria at Sciences Po and other universities, most students cooked for themselves because spending money every day at the cafeteria added to their daily expenses. Most students, specifically international students on their study abroad experience, would cook for themselves. Hence, you had to invest in cookware.

At the dorm where I was staying in Rennes, the rooms had space for a bedroom, a bathroom, a small fridge, and a closet. The kitchen was in the common area. Everyone on the floor had access to the kitchen, which included an electric stove and a microwave. Cookwares were not provided, so each student needed to buy their own. Thanks to Amazon and its variety of items, I purchased cookware on Amazon. One good option to purchase is the Amazon Basic Non-Stick Cookware. The 8-piece set includes pots, pans, and lids. The pots and pans have handles that stay cool even when you are cooking, ensuring you do not burn yourself or need to buy kitchen mitts.
Another good option for cookware is the CAROTE 14-Piece Non-Stick Pots and Pans. This collection includes an 8-inch fry pan, a 10-inch fry pan, a 2-qt saucepan with lid, a 4.5-qt stockpot with lid, a 4-qt sauté pan with lid, a ladle, a slotted spatula, and four pan protectors. It heats up quickly, ensuring less cooking time. It has a 12-month warranty. If you are like me and love hosting people, you will need to have dinnerware sets. The 18 Famiware Pieces offer you plates and bowls to host your acquaintances over. It is dishwasher safe and microwave safe. Another good option for dinnerware is the 18-piece HXYPN dinner set, which includes plates, bowls, and cups. This dinner set is crafted from natural wheat straw, a sustainable and reusable material. It is also microwave-safe, so you do not have to worry about it melting.
You may also add silverware to your kitchenware list. The 24-piece silverware set by MUTNITT gives you all of your silverware needs. It includes steak knives, dinner knives, forks, salad forks, teaspoons, and table spoons. After your study abroad experience, you can resell it to another international student, which I did when I completed my study abroad experience in France. Another option is to donate it to a non-profit organization or an immigration welcome center, which I did when I was in Belgium. Hence, investing in cookware and kitchenware is a good investment to make your apartment feel like home because it allows you to cook your favorite meals, host your new friends, and connect with your family traditions through food.

- Security Camera
The following item to add to ensure your apartment feels like home is a security camera. One of the attributes of having a home is feeling secure, and one way to feel safe is to ensure your safety at all times. As someone who experienced a burglary when I was abroad in Marseille, one of the mindboggling things about the experience is not knowing who the assailant was. When I went to the police station, although there was CCTV in the street, it did not capture the person who broke into my Airbnb in Marseille. I was unsure whether it was one person or multiple people. Post the event, I did not know whether I had passed by the assailant or not. Not knowing who traumatized me was traumatizing in itself, especially being in a foreign country.
I wished I had a camera to see who it was and spot him later. I felt like he marked me, and I did not know if he was following me post the attack. Although I understand that the event occurred at an Airbnb, and I was not responsible for installing cameras around the premises, this incident made me want to feel secure and protected in my apartment, especially in a city or country where I don’t know anyone. I am in charge of my safety parameters. Hence, I started looking into security cameras.

One of the security cameras to purchase is the Spy Hidden Camera by the ELEFOCUS store. One reason to love this camera is its size. The mini wireless camera blends seamlessly into any environment, allowing you to remain discreet. It has a 1080P Resolution, giving you a clear view of what the camera is capturing. Its night vision capability ensures everything, even in low-light conditions. It is wireless, which means it is less hassle to set up as you can connect to your wifi or hotspot. It detects motions as well, so it captures every movement. It is $6, which is very affordable for the level of peace it provides.
Another excellent option for a security camera is the Wyze Cam OG Smart Home Camera. It provides all the features you can expect from a security camera. However, one feature I particularly like about this camera is the 2-way audio capability, which includes a loudspeaker and microphone, allowing you to hear everything someone says from your phone. It has a 24/7 local recording feature, ensuring you do not miss anything. It has a built-in spotlight, which pierces through the darkness, and it is waterproof, so that you can have it outdoors. Although there are many other choices, these two choices are great options for international students studying abroad. They are small, easy to install, use, and pack over and over again.
- Study Lamp
One of the essential items for many college students is a reliable study lamp. In most colleges, students have to bring their own study lamps, and this requirement extends to those studying abroad as well. While some third-party student accommodation providers may supply study lamps in their dormitories, it is essential to note that this is not always guaranteed. Therefore, including a high-quality study lamp in your apartment is crucial for creating an optimal study environment.
As a college student, having adequate lighting can significantly impact your ability to focus and retain information. If you are sharing a dorm with someone or want to study late, a study lamp allows you not to disturb your roommate. A good study lamp should offer adjustable brightness levels and flexibility in positioning, allowing you to direct light precisely where you need it and not disturb anyone. Even if you are alone in a dorm or your apartment, turning on the central lighting may not be ideal. Personally, when I lived abroad by myself, I did not want my light to be on late at night as a security measure. So when I needed to study, I loved that my study lamp only illuminated where I needed it to illuminate. Hence, another reason to add a study lamp to your shopping list.

When shopping for one, you have to consider features such as energy efficiency, LED options for lower electricity consumption, and built-in USB ports for charging devices. It is vital to invest in a sturdy, versatile study lamp not only to enhance your study routine but also to contribute to your overall productivity during those late-night study sessions or reading marathons. The Led Desk Lamp by LIBORA is an excellent option that meets all of my study lamp requirements. The first reason I recommend this lamp is that it has 3 light modes with 10 different brightness levels. As someone with sensitive eyes who cannot stand high brightness, I love that this lamp is dimmable and adjustable to my eyes’ needs. The lamp also has a flexible arm so you can adjust it to where you need it to illuminate. Its high-quality LED beads ensure it is illuminated without glaring, flicking, or ghosting, so it is safe for your eyes. Similar to the lamp by LIBORA, the Airlonv LED Desk Lamp also offers a good option for a study lamp. It also has a USB adapter. Both lamps are easy to set up. After your study abroad, you can detach it and pack it to use it again later. A true must-have!
- Air Mattress
One of the highlights of college experiences is having sleepovers. Maybe you go out with your friends, and it is too late, and they are a little bit drunk, and you don’t feel comfortable having them go home by themselves in that state, so you offer them to stay over since you live closer to the city center or whatnot. That is a common experience of many college students, whether you are at your home university or doing an exchange abroad. Hence, it is wise to add an air mattress to your shopping list.
Air mattresses are an excellent option for your sleep needs in the first week of moving to a new place, and they are great to have for when you host a friend or a family member. When I moved to D.C. and did not have money in the first few weeks to invest in a proper bed and mattress, I slept on an air mattress. With technology and innovation, many air mattresses feel like an actual bed. They are thick, made with velvet materials, and have built-in pillows in them, making you forget they are not absolute beds. My friend introduced me to air mattresses when we were studying abroad in France. We lived in two different cities and decided to spend a weekend in each other’s cities. She was in Brest and I was in Rennes. When I was planning to host her, I was worried she would not feel at home because my twin bed was not going to accommodate both of us. She told me not to worry that she had an air mattress that she could bring over with her.

Although I was happy that she had someone comfortable to sleep with, as a host, I felt bad that I couldn’t provide that in my home, and she had to carry the heavy air mattress on the bus with her. When I was about to leave France and needed to sleep over at another friend’s dorm because I had to move out of my dorm a day early, I wondered how his twin bed was going to accommodate both of us. To my surprise, he, too, had an air mattress. His reasoning for having an air mattress was to host his guests and use it when he goes camping. I then realized how common it was for many students living in dorms to invest in air mattresses. So I added it to my shopping cart when I lived in Belgium and when I moved to D.C.
One air mattress that has good reviews on Amazon is the Zearna Air Mattress with a built-in pump. It is a twin-sized air mattress that inflates in 2 minutes and provides great support to your body. It is excellent for camping and a great option for your guests. The air mattress adopts a multi-layer soft top flocking, which is smooth, waterproof, and odor-resistant. Its twin size is a good option if you are in a dorm or a tiny studio apartment, for it won’t take up a lot of space. For those with a bigger space or people who rent in the private market, you may need a queen-size air mattress. The OhGeni Queen Air Mattress is a good option. It features an innovative air coil system that adapts to your body’s contour and distributes weight evenly so you do not feel like you are sinking. It is firm, can handle up to 650 lbs, so you and your friend can sleep in the same bed. The CHERIMOR brand also offers a good range of air mattresses. Its queen-size air mattress with a built-in pillow ensures you have a complete bed set for you and your guests. It can carry up to 800 lbs and is 40% more sturdy than most air mattresses. These options are affordable, reusable, and dependable. Hence, a must-add in your apartment abroad to make it a home that you will love hosting people in.

- Memory Foam Mattress
While the air mattress would mostly be for your guest, the memory foam mattress would be for you. When living abroad, there is no guarantee that you will find accommodation in the university dormitories or a third-party student dormitory, especially for students who are doing a direct exchange outside of their university connection or doing a master’s or PhD abroad. Most students would end up renting in the private housing market. Some apartments will be furnished, but most will not. Although most apartments that I visited did not have mattresses, they had a bedspring box, leaving you to purchase a mattress.
When I lived in Belgium, I had two different apartments. My first apartment was fully furnished, but I had an issue with the landlord, so I had to move after three months. Although I found another studio quickly, it was not furnished. I didn’t have a chair or a mattress. So, I had to shop for a new mattress. Being new and not knowing where the local mattress stores are can add to the frustration. I was lucky to have met a local who helped me locate a store. However, to remove the hassle, you can order it from Amazon. My friend and I in Belgium had to carry the bed on the bus, and it wasn’t very comfortable. With Amazon, they can deliver it straight to your apartment.

When it comes to mattresses, I recommend memory foam because they are affordable on Amazon. Being a student, you always want to be conscious of your finances, especially when you are living with a stipend and do not have a work permit to earn a living abroad. For less than $100, you can get a soft mattress that is comfortable and provides everything you need for a good night’s sleep. The second reason to love memory foam mattresses is their softness. Nothing beats coming home to a soft mattress that is ready to welcome you and make you feel safe. One of the foam memory mattresses I recommend is the FDW 8 Inches Twin-Size Bed. The gel-inflated memory foam enhances the airflow and temperature, allowing your body to stay calm and comfortable all night long. The foam contours to your body position, giving you the necessary support while you lie down and unwind.
Another good and cheaper option is the KOPEECHE 6-inch gel memory foam mattress. Not only does it have the same features as the FDW memory foam mattress, but its cover is removable and washable. If you are living in a bigger apartment and want a queen-size mattress, you can purchase the Amazon Basic Memory Foam Mattress. After your time abroad, you can donate it or sell it on Facebook Market like many international students do. I donated my bed to another student who was living in my building. Nonetheless, purchasing a memory foam bed is a must when you want to create a home you will love to come and lie in.

- Wall Decoration
Next on the list is wall decorations. Transforming an apartment into a cozy and inviting home often begins with wall decoration. This aspect of interior design plays a pivotal role in expressing personal style and creating a warm atmosphere. Wall decorations such as paintings, prints, or photographs can showcase your personality and interests, allowing you to create a space that feels uniquely yours. Whether it’s a vibrant canvas that energizes the room or a tranquil landscape that promotes relaxation, the right art piece can set the mood and inspire feelings of comfort.
Adding decorative elements, such as mirrors, can enhance the visual appeal of your space while making it appear larger and brighter. This optical illusion can be particularly beneficial in smaller apartments where space is limited. You can purchase decorative mirrors like the Weysat 30 Pcs Mirror Wall Stickers Decor. You can add it to your bedroom or living room decoration to brighten it up. Another good option for a wall decoration is the Roowest 2 Pcs Leaf Teardrop Mirror Wall. With this wall decoration, you can add it to the entryway, bathroom wall, or living room. For my fashionista who likes to spend time in front of the mirror to ensure their outfit looks good, you can buy a full-sized mirror like the Delma Glass Full Length Wall Mirror.

Another type of decoration you can incorporate is textured wall hangings or tapestries, which add depth and warmth, creating a welcoming environment that invites guests to feel at home. One wall hanging tapestry I recommend is the KJHL Black and White Inspirational Quote You Are Wall Tapestry. It includes inspirational quotes that will uplift you every day and inspire your guests. You can also purchase the Dazzle Bright 300 LED Curtain Lights, Plug-in Fairy Curtain to act as a room divider and a decoration.
When I lived abroad, I used picture frames as my wall decorations. I wanted to feel like I had my family with me. I hung pictures on the wall and placed inspirational quotes around my studio to ensure I stayed on track with my plans and goals. The Vittanly 15-Piece picture frames offer different dimensions for your pictures, allowing you to create a beautiful collage as a wall decoration. These pieces are sturdy and scratch-resistant. Another decorative wall decoration is the Family Tree Collage Picture Frame by bllokna. It is a fun DIY wall decoration activity that will add a homey feel to your room, studio, or apartment. Wall decorations can serve as conversation starters, allowing you to share stories about your chosen pieces. Hence, investing in wall decoration is more than just enhancing aesthetics; it’s about cultivating an atmosphere that reflects your identity, making your apartment a true sanctuary where you can unwind and feel at ease.
- Door Lock
When studying abroad, creating a sense of home in your apartment is vital for both comfort and security. One essential item that can significantly contribute to this is a reliable door lock. A secure door lock provides peace of mind, allowing you to relax and enjoy your new environment fully. Knowing that your living space is protected from potential intrusions not only enhances your sense of safety but also empowers you to focus on your studies and explore your new city without constant worry. Investing in a high-quality door lock can transform your apartment from just a temporary lodging into a sanctuary.
Door locks serve as your first line of defense, ensuring that only you and those you trust can access your home. The added security is fundamental when living in a shared accommodation, where the level of familiarity with other residents may vary. Additionally, the feeling of safety that comes with a secure door lock helps cultivate a more inviting atmosphere, allowing you to invite friends over and create shared experiences. Enhancing the security of your living space with a reliable door lock is a straightforward yet impactful step towards making your apartment truly feel like home.

In a previous post, we discussed having portable door locks. These locks are small enough to pack and reusable. You can use it while staying at a hotel, Airbnb, or your studio apartment. Portable door locks are a better choice because your stay abroad is temporary, so you don’t need to invest in a complicated door lock system. Plus, they provide maximum security. One option to purchase is the 2-Pack Portable Door Lock by Rerishom. This door lock prevents unauthorized entry. Even if someone has a key, they will not be able to open the door from the outside. This door lock is proper when you come home and add the door lock to your door. It will give you peace of mind knowing that you are in control of your safety. For those worried about the security of their home when you are not there, there is the BESTTEN Interior and Exterior Entry Door knob Lock. It ensures the safety of your room or apartment even when you are away. It is easy to install, and you can uninstall it after your study abroad program with no issue. Hence, a great addition to ensure your apartment feels like home, as the door lock ensures your safety and security.
- Safe
Another safety item to purchase to make your apartment feel like home is a safe. Studying abroad, although it presents an exciting opportunity for personal and academic growth, also comes with unique challenges, including the need to ensure personal safety and security. You don’t only need to provide your security with a security camera and a portable door lock. You also need to secure your valuables. Hence, one essential investment that students should consider is a safe for their apartment.
A safe provides a secure place to store valuable possessions, such as passports, money, electronics, and personal documents, including rental agreements, health insurance, and more. Having a safe gives you peace of mind, which is crucial, especially for those living in shared accommodations or unfamiliar neighborhoods. Knowing that your valuables are secure allows you to focus on your studies and social experiences without the constant worry of theft. Owning a safe can facilitate a sense of permanence in an otherwise temporary living situation. It symbolizes home, representing a space where you can keep your life organized amidst the chaos of living abroad.
One good option to purchase is the Bonsaii Safe Box with Key Lock. Its small size makes it perfect for hiding around your room or studio, and it remains unnoticeable to visitors or intruders. It comes with two pre-drilled installation holes, making it easy to install this safe under a closet, drawer, or table. Another good option is the Yuanshikj Electronic Digital Safebox. It is easy to program and set your security code to lock and unlock the safe. Although it is digital, it comes with an emergency key to facilitate opening it if you forget the security code. It also has two pre-drill holes for easy installation. A third option is the xydled Fire Resistant Safe Box. Like the others, it has the same features to ensure peace of mind as it secures your valuables. Hence, a safe is not just a practical item; it is a crucial component in creating a welcoming and secure environment that truly feels like home.

- Organizers
The last item to add to your apartment shopping list is organizers. Whereas room dividers help you organize your space or your room, organizers help you with your items, especially when you are living in a studio or renting a room abroad. There are several types of organizers to purchase, creating a home atmosphere where everything is in place and easily accessible. The first categories of organizers you may need are calendars and planners to help you create structure in what can quickly become a chaotic schedule. With classes, assignments, and extracurricular activities, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.
A planner or digital organizer allows students to map out their commitments, ensuring they allocate time effectively for both study and leisure. You can choose physical wall calendars like the SUNEE Wall Calendar 2025-2026, which begins from October 2025 to June 2027. It contains vertical lines for you to write your plans and assignments clearly. You can hang it on a wall in your room or studio to ensure you are always aware of what you need to do. I have the Magnetic Dry-Erase Calendar from the Clever Clean Store. It comes with a monthly, weekly, daily, and to-do list calendar that helps you stay organized every day. I love writing on it and checking off my to-do list every day.

Some people who are tech-lovers would benefit from digital calendars and planners. One option for a digital planner is the LOOFII 10.1-inch Smart Digital Calendar. It syncs with Google, iCloud, and Outlook via the eCalendar app. You can customize it to your liking and switch it up to create a planner that brings out your creativity. It can also sync to your phone so you are constantly aware of your studies, assignments, and goals. The balance is crucial for maintaining mental health, thoroughly enjoying the study abroad experience, and having efficient study habits.
Another type of organizer is a closet organizer. My second studio apartment, when I lived in Ghent, didn’t have enough space to store my clothes or shoes. Although I organized my shoes on the floor, they took up a lot of space. My studio was also too small to store laundry items and other essentials. Hence, I needed to invest in some organizers like the ULG 1 Pack Over the Door Organizer. It has five large pockets to accommodate larger items, such as detergent, body wash, shoes, and more. It has 10 small pockets for smaller items. You can also purchase HOMIDEC Closet Organizers and Storage, which includes 9 cube shelves for shoes, clothes, towels, and accessories. It features materials that ensure it is sturdy and stands without falling apart. Another organizer that is great for storage is the 4-packs Storage Organizer by Caktrale. It is multifunctional and can be used for clothes storage, shoes, or kitchen items. Overall, they all provide you with an organized room, where you have everything in an easy-to-find place. Hence, a must-have!

Conclusion
In conclusion, creating a home away from home is essential when studying abroad. Your apartment should be a sanctuary where you can recharge, reflect, and feel at ease amidst the challenges of living in a new country. By adding personal touches, organization, and meaningful decor, you can transform your temporary space into a comfortable retreat that enhances your overall experience. Just as I found peace and happiness in my Belgian studio, you too can cultivate an environment that represents your style and fosters comfort. Remember, every little detail contributes to making your apartment feel like home. Embrace the process of settling in, and don’t shy away from expressing your personality in your living space. It will not only help ease the transition into a new environment but also create lasting memories during this transformative time in your life.
