Going to Monaco in 2019
When people ask about my favorite destination, I always answer, “Monaco.” I went to Monaco in May 2019 with acquaintances I met while studying abroad in the North West of France. We decided to visit the South of France before returning to our countries. This trip was my first group trip since living in France because I had only been on solo trips before that trip. We started in Nice, and someone told me how close we were to Monaco and that we should go there the next day.
The day trip to Monaco was my first trip without anyone planning our itinerary. We did not know where to go, where to start, what to see, or what local cuisine to eat. The night before deciding to go to Monaco from Nice, I did not know much about Monaco. I heard of it because of the movie with Selena Gomez and because my mother told me about Grace Kelly. I know it was wealthy and is for the rich. Before visiting, I had yet to make plans to go there or what to see when I got there. All I knew was that the train ticket was €3, which was affordable. The day in Monaco was so spontaneous. It was the first trip I had done that made me feel like a nomad.
My friends and I explored the entire city-state on foot. From Monaco-Monte-Carlo train station to the Prince’s Palace to Monte-Carlo Casino, everywhere we visited was astonishing. It was a day where we enjoyed the scenery, stopping along the way to enjoy the cafes and ice cream shops. We did not know where we were. We had our maps, pointed to a cool place, and went there. There was no dull place, and everywhere we went was a fantastic surprise. If you wish to visit the sovereign city-state, Monaco has everything you need to spend a splendid day without feeling unfulfilled. Here is a guide to six must-do activities for an unforgettable day trip to Monaco.
- Stroll through the Prince’s Palace
One of the must-see attractions is the Prince’s Palace. Start your day trip with a visit to the heart of Monaco – the Prince’s Palace. The Prince’s Palace sits atop a rocky cliff. This magnificent palace is the official residence of the Grimaldi family, the current ruling family in Monaco. Explore the opulent State Apartments, wander through beautifully landscaped gardens, and don’t miss the daily changing of the guard ceremony at 11:55 AM. The panoramic views of the Mediterranean from here are simply breathtaking.
I did not know we walked to the Prince’s Palace when we were in Monaco. During the trip, I forgot that Monaco was a monarchy. Because this trip was spontaneous and we did not have phones, I have no idea how we made it to the Prince’s Palace. It wasn’t until I was a few feet away from the guards that I realized we were on royal grounds. Should we have planned this trip better, we could have booked a tour to see the inside of the palace. Next time I visit Monaco, I will tour the Prince’s Palace. However, if you wish to visit the Prince’s Palace, you can check out their website. The palace opens its door to visitors from late March to mid-October. There are three schedule options that you can choose from to visit. The first option is from March 26th to June 30th, the second is from July 1st to August 31st, and the last is from September 1st to October 13th. The entry ticket costs €10 for adults and €5 for young people aged 5 to 17. You can find all the details on the website to plan accordingly.
- Take a Gamble at Casino de Monte-Carlo
Secondly, no visit to Monaco is complete without a visit to the iconic Casino de Monte-Carlo. Even if you’re not a seasoned gambler, you can admire the Belle Époque architecture, opulent interiors, and the extravagant chandeliers adorning this world-famous casino. The Casino de Monte-Carlo is a breathtaking architectural masterpiece. It is not just a gambling destination. The Belle Époque style, popular during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, inspires the building’s exterior and interior designs. The architecture features intricate details, while the interiors have lavish decorations, including chandeliers, sculptures, and paintings. As an architecture enthusiast, I was amazed by the detail-oriented craftsmanship that went into creating this iconic casino.
When we visited, the people were not there to gamble but to appreciate the art that this building embodies. A long line of people was waiting to experience the casino’s splendor. Moreover, the beauty of the casino is not just on the inside. Casino de Monte-Carlo sits in a picturesque location, offering stunning views inside and outside the building. The gardens and fountains surrounding the casino are equally impressive. Every corner of the casino presents beautiful scenery, and it’s no wonder that many tourists visit this landmark every year. There are hotels and restaurants that ensure that if you choose to stay in Monaco, you will have the most luxurious experience of your life. The casino is not just for gamblers. Even if you’re not a devoted gambler, a visit to the Casino de Monte-Carlo is worth it to appreciate the art and architecture. Just remember to dress elegantly. Men are required to wear a suit and tie after 8 PM.
- Explore the Monaco Oceanographic Museum
Monaco is not just about glitz and glamour; it’s also home to the fascinating Monaco Oceanographic Museum. Founded by Prince Albert I, a renowned oceanographer, this museum houses an incredible collection of marine life, including rare species, coral reefs, and interactive exhibits. The rooftop terrace offers breathtaking views of the harbor and the Mediterranean Sea.
As a sea lover, the Monaco Oceanographic Museum is a great place to explore the wonders of the sea. The museum’s building is an architectural masterpiece perched on a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. It features ornate facades, grand staircases, and beautiful gardens that add to its charm. Inside, visitors can explore exhibits that showcase the diversity of marine life. The Shark Lagoon is one of the museum’s highlights, featuring a massive tank filled with several species of sharks. Visitors can watch these majestic creatures swim and feed in their natural habitat. The museum also has a touch pool where visitors can interact with sea stars, sea urchins, and other marine animals.
The museum’s rooftop terrace offers breathtaking views of the harbor and the Mediterranean Sea. It’s a great place to relax and take in the stunning surroundings. A restaurant on the terrace serves delicious food and drinks, perfect for those who love seafood. Monaco’s Oceanographic Museum is a must-visit destination for anyone who loves the sea. It’s an ideal place to learn about marine life, appreciate the beauty of the ocean, and enjoy a day out with family and friends.
- Savor a Michelin-Star Lunch
Another must-do activity is to treat your taste buds to an unforgettable culinary experience by enjoying lunch at one of Monaco’s Michelin-starred restaurants. The city-state boasts a range of dining options, from Mediterranean seafood to gourmet French cuisine. Whether you dine at Le Louis XV-Alain Ducasse or Le Vistamar, you’re in for a culinary delight.
My favorite activity to do when traveling is tasting local cuisines. I save a lot of money before traveling to eat without financial restraint. The dining experience at Michelin restaurants is like no other. If you’re planning a trip to Monaco and want an unforgettable culinary experience, I highly recommend dining at one of the Michelin-starred restaurants. The exceptional cuisine and service are sure to impress. When you enter one of the restaurants, there is impeccable service and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The menu is extensive; each dish is a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavors. The attention to detail and use of fresh, high-quality ingredients is evident in every bite. The wine selection is impressive, and the sommelier is knowledgeable and passionate about their craft. They’ll recommend the perfect pairing for each course.
Overall, the dining experience is a feast for the senses and a definite highlight of any trip to Monaco. The price is well worth it for the exceptional quality you’ll receive. Whether you’re a food lover or simply looking for a special occasion dinner, dining at a Michelin restaurant in Monaco is an experience you won’t forget and will remind you always to treat yourself.
- Take a Spin on the Grand Prix Circuit
One of the activities Monaco is known for is thrilled rides. For adrenaline junkys, a day trip to Monaco wouldn’t be complete without a thrilling drive along the famous Monaco Grand Prix circuit. The streets of Monaco transform into a high-speed racecourse each year, and you can experience the twists and turns for yourself. Alternatively, visit the Automobile Museum for a dose of Formula 1 history.
During our trip to Monaco, we saw numerous tourists drive around the streets of Monte-Carlo. At the time, I did not know how to drive a car. However, this is something I will do now when I visit Monte-Carlo. Driving the Grand Prix circuit in Monaco is an experience of a lifetime. This iconic circuit is one of the most challenging and demanding tracks on the Formula 1 calendar, with narrow streets, tight turns, and elevation changes. It has stunning scenery, including the Mediterranean Sea and the luxurious yachts in the harbor.
I recommend that you only drive if you are an experienced driver because driving the Grand Prix circuit requires skill, precision, and nerves of steel. It has many tight corners, including the famous hairpin turn, where drivers have to brake hard and navigate a 180-degree turn. There are also several elevation changes, including a steep climb up to Casino Square, which requires drivers to maintain speed and control. Driving the circuit in a supercar or a sports car is an exhilarating experience. You can feel the car’s power and handling as you navigate the tight corners and accelerate through the straights. However, driving the circuit has its challenges. The circuit is open to the public most of the year. You must share the road with other drivers and pedestrians. The streets are also narrow, with little room for error. One wrong move, and you could end up damaging your car or causing an accident. Therefore, you should only participate in this activity if you are experienced and comfortable.
However, driving the Grand Prix circuit is an unforgettable experience despite the challenges. It gives you a new appreciation for the skill and bravery of Formula One drivers. And it allows you to experience the thrill and excitement of driving on one of the most iconic circuits in the world.
- Relax on Larvotto Beach
A trip to a country facing the Mediterranean Sea is incomplete if you don’t go to the beach. As the sun begins to set, unwind and soak up the Mediterranean sun on Larvotto Beach. This pristine stretch of sand offers the perfect setting for a leisurely swim or a romantic sunset stroll. Rent a sunbed, sip on a refreshing cocktail, and relish the serene ambiance away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Nothing is better than ending the day full of excitement in a country like Monaco than at the beach.
In conclusion, if you wish to explore an entire country in a day, look no further than Monaco. It is one of the only places in the world where you can explore on foot, without a phone, and still find your way around town. A day trip to Monaco allows you to immerse yourself in luxury, culture, and natural beauty. From royal palaces to world-renowned casinos, Monaco has something for every traveler. So, pack your bags, put on your finest attire, and prepare for a day filled with unforgettable experiences in this glamorous playground on the French Riviera.
