If you’re a young person looking to broaden your horizons and gain new perspectives, Europe is the place to be. Its rich history, diverse cultures, and beautiful landscapes make it an amazing destination for exploring and experiencing. There are countless opportunities for studying abroad, backpacking through different countries, or simply taking in the local sights and sounds. From the bustling streets of Paris to the charming canals of Venice, Europe is full of unique and exciting destinations that are sure to inspire and delight. With its excellent public transportation systems, affordable accommodations, and friendly locals(sometimes), Europe is a safe and accessible destination for young people from all walks of life. So if you’re seeking adventure, cultural enrichment, and unforgettable memories, Europe is the perfect place.
As I sat on the plane heading back to France from Milan, I pondered on where I should start my young professional life. After reflecting on my week in Milan, my day trip to Rome, and my study abroad experiences in France and Belgium, I realized that starting my career in any Western European country would be advantageous for young professionals like myself. Here are four important reasons why Europe is beneficial for young professionals. These reasons are not only significant but have the potential to positively impact your career.
- It’s Calm & Laid Back
The serene and harmonious vibe of Europe is well-known. The cities are impeccably organized and the streets are pristine. Europeans are courteous and hospitable(sometimes), making it an enjoyable destination to visit or reside in. The splendid architecture and scrumptious cuisine are a treat for the senses. The lush parks and gardens provide a perfect ambiance to relax and de-stress. The diverse and vibrant culture is reflected in the numerous museums and galleries that one can explore. In conclusion, Europe is an idyllic place to bask in tranquility and serenity. As someone from the United States, I can’t help but feel that our culture is incredibly competitive and fast-paced. Going from the intense atmosphere of college to the cutthroat competition of job hunting and applying for fellowships can be a real shock to the system. A lot of people, myself included, experience a sort of “college withdrawal syndrome” when we leave that environment. That’s why I think Europe, with its slower pace and peaceful atmosphere, can be the perfect place for young professionals to thrive.
- Work to Live, not Live to Work
Working in Europe is quite different from working in the United States. Europeans prioritize their personal lives and work to live, while Americans often live to work. With social assistance and adequate income, European professionals can focus on other aspects of their lives beyond their careers. This is especially important for young adults who have just left the competitive environment of college or graduate school. Unlike American professionals, Europeans do not worry about the next steps in their lives. Despite their grievances with their countries, Europeans do not struggle with financial burdens such as student loans, healthcare costs, and housing expenses. They receive housing allowances that help them pay rent and live independently, without the added pressure of financial stress. During my study abroad program in France, I was pleasantly surprised by the housing benefits I received from the CAF, France’s housing agency. My rent was reduced significantly, enabling me to save money and treat myself to experiences I never thought possible, such as visiting the Principality of Monaco. Although Europe’s bureaucratic system can be frustratingly slow at times, these benefits provided me with a more balanced and fulfilling lifestyle.
- Continental Economic Opportunity
For centuries, Europe has been a major player in the global economy, and it continues to thrive as one of the most prosperous regions in the world. Young people working in Europe have the opportunity to contribute to that prosperity. With a population of more than 742 million, Europe is the second largest economy globally, after the United States. The European Union, consisting of 27 member states, provides ample job opportunities for young people, with many of its member states fostering robust trade relationships with countries worldwide. By working in Europe, young people can learn from and contribute to this economic powerhouse, ultimately benefiting themselves, and the European economy as a whole, and gain transferable skills which you can market back to their native countries.
If you possess a European residency, you are in an advantageous position to seize opportunities in other European nations. This is particularly beneficial if you desire to work in multiple countries throughout your professional journey. Although the process has slightly altered since Brexit, it is still feasible to work in any of the 27 EU countries with a residency card from any one country. This exposure to a plethora of prospects allows you to gain valuable experience and knowledge that can aid in career advancement. If you aspire to broaden your horizons and explore new opportunities, acquiring a European residency is undoubtedly worth acquiring.
- Small and Easy to Explore
Traveling is one of my favorite things to do as a Nomad, but it can be tough to do so in the United States on a low-income budget. The U.S. is a huge country, and getting from one coast to the other can be very expensive. I just got back from a trip to New Orleans, and the flight alone from my hometown of Providence cost me $768 for only four days. That’s a lot of money for someone on a tight budget. However, in Europe, there are so many opportunities to travel and discover new wonders. With the amount I spent on my trip to New Orleans, I could have gone to five different European countries. There are many travel incentives geared towards young people that encourage exploration and adventure in Europe.
If you’re under the age of 25 or 26 in Europe, you’ll be happy to hear that there are a lot of great discounts available to you! You can enjoy reduced ticket prices, free entry to amazing attractions, and discounts on events. Just imagine being able to visit places like the Chateaux of Versailles, Louvres, the Belgian Royal Palace, and many more for free! During the summer or any school holiday period, the Belgian transportation company offers an unlimited pass to travel around the country for only €31, which means you can travel every day during the month for only €1 per trip. When you consider the price of €1 and the incredible experiences you can have by visiting places like Brugge, Brussels, Namur, Liege, and Wavre, it’s an amazing deal. Other EU countries have similar incentives, so you can explore and have once-in-a-lifetime experiences all over Europe!
- It’s Good To Be A Foreigner
As someone who has spent most of their life living as a foreigner, I can attest to the incredible sense of freedom that comes with it. While adapting to a new culture and lifestyle can certainly be a challenge, countless personal benefits come with being a foreigner. For one, it provides the opportunity to reinvent oneself and grow without fear of judgment. Without the pressures and expectations of one’s “normal” life, it becomes easier to try new things and step outside of one’s comfort zone. I have taken advantage of this freedom by doing things like standing on a see-through glass floor in one of the world’s tallest buildings or celebrating my 21st birthday in Paris overlooking the Eiffel Tower. Every time I return from a trip abroad, I feel like I’ve gained new life skills and become a better, happier version of myself. Europe, in particular, is the perfect place to experience this sense of liberation and independence that comes with being a foreigner.
In conclusion, living in Europe has numerous benefits that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. From the rich history and culture to the diverse landscapes and modern amenities, Europe truly has something for everyone. Whether you’re a lover of art and architecture or an outdoor enthusiast, Europe’s cities, towns, and countryside have something to offer. Furthermore, living in Europe provides access to high-quality healthcare, education, and social services that prioritize the well-being of its citizens. Overall, there’s no denying that Europe is a great place to call home, especially for young professionals.
